(37) alum cliffs

60 Great Short Walks Tasmania Australia - National Parks and World Heritage SitesAlum Cliffs, towering above the Mersey River, are spectacular in anyone’s language. Tall and rugged with trees and ferns growing on the steep cliff face, sprouting from seemingly bare rock, showing the sheer tenacity of the region’s plant life.

Many visitors combine the 800m (one way) walk to view the Alum Cliffs, which are part of the Gog Range, with a visit to the nearby Mole Creek Caves and perhaps a side trip downstream to see Lobster Falls. In spring and early summer, wild flowers are abundant in the area and create a wonderful display of nature’s colourful palette.

The Alum Cliffs walk is rated at Level 2 and is suitable for most levels of fitness. It is generally a dry track and has quite a gentle uphill climb. For most walkers, not counting photo or picnic stops, the round trip will take between 20 and 40 minutes on the recently upgraded track.

As always, we suggest you dress appropriately for the weather. Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen should be used. Taking a jersey or jacket along is recommended.

Because of the vertical cliffs and the river, children should be closely supervised at all times.

NO pets, firearms or bicycles are permitted on the track.

Facilities:
The closest toilet facilities can be found a Mole Creek about 3.5km away and at Chudleigh.

Vehicle Access:
To reach the Alum Cliffs, travel via either Deloraine or Sheffield. The track is reached along a well sign posted loop road off the B12 between Mole Creek and Chudleigh.
